so i just had one little sip of my coffee while visiting my nieces, when my telephone rang.... "school" it said. it was 11 am. they are out on 12.15. i immediately knew again something was wrong.
it was Ruben's teacher. she told me he fell, hurt his arm, but didn't want to move it anymore and was in pain.... i told her i was a 20 minute drive away, but would send his father right away. called his father who jumped on his bike to Ruben right away. i flew out of the house into my car. remembering myself while trying not to STEP ON THAT FRIGGING GAS PEDAL if i would be there 5 minutes later that it would be no problem at all. he was alive. it was 'only his arm' this time.... but my goodness all i wanted to do is speed like hell trough traffic. i didn't. i was nervous and tried to focus on my breathing and the radio. i knew it wasn't too bad and i just had to trust it would be all okay.
when i turned around the corner of school, i saw Arjan walking with Ruben already holding his arm. i knew right away, that must be broken. we went to the doctors who helped us right away. (it's only 1 minute walk from school).
he asked Ruben what happened. he fell backwards and hurt his arm (wrist). the dr. knows Rubens history and decided he had to go to hospital right away, and immediately notified the x-ray ladies we were coming.
luckely they have stripbooks at the waiting room in the hospital. x-rays were made and they told us already his arm was broken. Ruben got real nervous, afraid for surgery. we needed to see the surgeon, but it was kinda busy. so we waited just another hour.
the surgeon came in and told us he broke his wrist, but in a 'good' way. no surgery was needed. Ruben yelled very loud "HALLELUJAH!!". he was so relieved he didn't need any surgery!
i've been told this is a "greenstick" break.
so hop, off to the plasterroom
and there he goes. another limb in plaster....
this was heavy plaster and he had to wear this sling a week. a week after that he would receive "lighter" plaster.
so the relaxing started :). he joked at the plaster room, that this was his third time (at 3 his left arm, at 5 his right thigh-bone and now at 8 his right wrist). he told her that he only needed to break his left leg and he would have quartet.... come on dude!! stop already!
so sis cancelled her date for that afternoon so she could play with him. she's the most amazing sweet big sis you can imagine. ok, sometimes not so, haha, but she really took care of him again!
friends came to check him out :)
his bestie came to join him. you can still game with one arm you know!
soccer with a tennisball with a broken wrist in a sling? no problem at all! happily giving mom a heart attack...
and after that week, he got himself some new shiny plaster. this woman was incredible good with him. noticed his history (they great us, we are VIP'ers now :D), and really respected his fear and at the same time helped him over it!
he was soooo nervous for removing the plaster, but after she did that in a blink of an eye, he started talking and talking and talking. all the build up excitement was coming out by talking like crazy. she let him and helped him. new experience for me :)
there goes the tough cookie.
yup. tree (or stump :) climbing is part of the deal again!
and with his bestie last week on a schooltrip. look at them. their bond is amazing.
and this morning he was aloud to get rid of his plaster himself! so 1 week 'hard plaster' and 10 days of this and all is well again! wow, those bones grow quickly together huh?!
so it felt a little bit strange today with his arm "free", but he uses it more and more. it comes naturally. i will contact my physical therapist so he can have some excercises to strengthen the mustle around his wrist again. he'll be just fine again!
and i can relax again......
so it's been a crazy 3 weeks but we are back on track again :).
life is good. even if you break your bones a bit too many times....
